The green line.
Hello hello, I come back today to share with you one of the more interesting experience that I lived here in Nicosia.
For my last IMAP, I decided to explore the green line, and to know more about the war that changed the history of Cyprus.
Everything started in 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied a third of the country in the northern part. Since that year, the island has remained divided along the called “green line”. Like you can see in the pictures below the island is divided into two with walls, barbed wire, armies and military checkpoints where it is mandatory to show the document to pass.
Why is called Greenline? because the General Peter Young, commander of the British forces on the island, divide Nicosia drawing
with a green pencil on the map.
The nice thing to know is that the new generation wants to stay together and feel free in their own country without walls and without needing to show their documents in order to move from one part to another. And I hope that their strength will be able to destroy the ugly that happened in the past and the walls of this city.
After all, I would like to remind you that Nicosia is a fascinating city full of history!
