Short escapes: Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates

After you visit Kourion Archaeological Site it’s compulsory to go to The Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, situated at 3  km of the Kourion and 21 km west of Limassol . Like all the sanctuaries of Apollo, it was located outside the residential area, to the west of the ancient city of Kourion.

The Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates was one of the most important sanctuaries of ancient Cyprus, with a history going back as early as the Late Bronze Age (2000 BC)/. Apollo Hylates, god of the woodland, was the protector of Kourion. His sanctuary was an important religious centre. It consisted of Apollo’s temple, which has been partly restored, pilgrim halls, a bath complex and a holy precinct.

We arrived there around 2 o’clock in the afternoon and we spend more than one hour trying to capture a perfect picture with the amazing temple and the rest of the impressive ruins.

This place definitely deserves to be visited and it’s also very cheap to visit it, 2.5 € or free for students or owners of Erasmus card.

Closed on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Easter Sunday (Greek Orthodox)
