A.G. Leventis Gallery

Because I am always looking for nice and interesting places, I chose to visit A.G. Leventis Gallery, and it was definitely a very good choice.

It was a  beautiful sunny morning and probably I was the first visitor of that day thus, I had the all museum only for myself. I spend almost 3 hours, admiring every corner, taking pictures and reading all the explanations, I felt like I was renting  all museum for me.

The  A.G. Leventis Gallery  was inaugurated on Saturday 26 April 2014 by the President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Nicos Anastasiades and the European Commissioner for education, culture, multilingualism and youth Mrs. Androulla Vassiliou. The  three collections of the Gallery are each divided on one floor. You can admire the paintings, the furniture  and the objects of the Paris Collection and also can travel to Greece and Cyprus through the magnificent works of the Greek and Cyprus Collections.

At the Ground Floor is placed the A.G. Leventis corner from where you can find out more information about Anastasios G. Leventis and you can admire a interpretation of his office. It was interesting to find that he was primarily a businessman and he formed his own trading company and after that he was a leading philanthropist in Africa  and Cyprus.

Also at the ground floor is the Cyprus Collection, a quite small collection but we have to take into consideration that the foundation began to collect Cypriot art only recently.  From this part of the gallery I was impressed about the monumental and most famous work of Adamantios Diamantis  “The world of Cyprus” which was created between 1967 an 1972. It is made  up of 67 different  figures representing human types,symbolic figures through which, he convey the traditional world of Cyprus.

At the First Floor you will find The Paris Collection with two galleries. Gallery A is dedicated to the Old Masters and academic art. Evoking the unique ambiance of the collector’s home, the presentation includes a wood-panelled room as well as a wealth of period furniture and objects d’art , which form an integral part of the Collection.  From this part of the gallery the french room caught my attention, probable because I am passionate about furniture and decorating items. Also I was impressed about the image of  St Fancis in Ecstasy created by El Greco one of the Venetian master’s most famous disciples.

Gallery B of the Paris Collection illustrates the journey from Impressionism to the early days of Modernism.

At the Second Floor is presented the collection of works by 19^th –and 20^th century Greek artist. In Gallery A, visitors can trace the development of painting  from the 19^th century to the academic manifestations of the 20^th and the Gallery B showcases the creative pursuits of the 20^th century . In this way the visitors can get an overview of the evolution of Greek art of the period. Nikolaos Gyzis’s creation is the one that particularly attracted my attention : Harmony , 1893.

Besides of the artworks from the A.G. Leventis Gallery  I was pleasantly surprised by the architecture and design of the building. With all of this together visiting this gallery can be a complete art  experience

The A. G. Leventis Gallery is open every day except Tuesday from 10.00 to 17.00.
Open on Wednesday until 22.00.
