Museum of George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides Collection
Museum of George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides Collection (Donated by Clio and Solon Triantafyllides)

Hidden away in a part of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, is this collection of artefacts, from various different sites around Cyprus. It’s not the most obvious museum in the city, as it’s in the foundation, which houses other facilities, but shouldn’t be missed because the collection here is really intriguing. One thing that always fascinates me is objects made out of glass, such as small flasks and jugs, which the collection contains. They are a type of object that you don’t see so much of from the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

The objects span from the Mycenaean and Minoan periods through Hellenistic Kingdoms, Romans to the Medieval period. A time span which due to the almost uninterrupted history of the island means there’s quite a lot of artefacts over this 4-5,000 year period.
It also has an interactive display, which reconstructs objects from a replica shard of pottery, unfortunately it wasn’t working when I was there, however if it functions on busier days, then it’s a cool addition.
I went on a Monday afternoon, which may just not be a not busy period, but I had the whole collection to myself, which for an archaeology nerd was fantastic. This was made better by the entrance being free. You don’t even have to pay to have the museum all to yourself.
