Lemessos Medieval Museum
In this article, I will write about the museum that I visited once when I went to Limassol for a weekend. Actually, you can combine vacations entertainment with education by visiting museums and archeological sites. Personally, when I travel to a new place I like to discover it. Discover every small part of the area, trying to figure out the story behind every wall and every rock. Trying to understand the philosophy and the history of the city and the inhabitants of each city. Eventually, Goethe once said ‘a person who does not know the history of the last 3,000 years wanders in the darkness of ignorance, unable to make sense of the reality around him’. Knowing the history of a place makes it easier to understand the culture of the place and people’s mentality.

So, the name of the museum is a Lemessos Medieval Castle/Museum is located near Limassol’s old port. It’s a castle which was built in the 13th century on the site of an earlier Byzantine castle near the old harbor. According to the archaeological sources, the castle was much larger in its original form. As many castles as this one is used to be for the ward off the sea pirates. It reminds me, of many castles that I’ve been visited in the past in Greece. Island Chores were built to be like invisible and to hide from the sea pirates. And so, the Lemessos castle with the medieval architecture takes you to another era presenting you the life of the past cause it houses exhibits from medieval pottery to superb silver Byzantine era plates, tombstones, weapons, crosses and coins.
It was a very nice visit with free entrance and the humidity 83%. It has 2 floors with the exhibitions and the rooftop in which actually you can see the sea and the city.
