Romanian Traditions: Mărţişor
This small decoration made of white and red thread, which is given to loved ones on March 1st as ”announcer of spring”, has received throughout time various meanings, from bringing good luck to symbol of nature’s rebirth.
In general, women and girls receive ”mărţişoare ” and wear them throughout March, as a symbol of the arrival of spring. In Moldova though, as per custom, girls gift these decorations to boys.
Very often, together with the Mărţişor, people gift also spring flowers, usually snowdrops.
