THE VENETIAN CARNIVAL
The Venetian Carnival is one of the most famous carnival event in the world for its strong identity and its ability to preserve traditional masks that always remain magnificent over the centuries, but always current thanks to the imagination and creativity of craftsmen and enthusiasts
The origins of the Venice Carnival date back to the Middle Ages. In 1094 the term “Venice Carnival” was mentioned for the first time in a document by Doge Vitale Falier. The Christian name of the Carnival (“carnem levare”, expression in the Middle Ages to indicate the abstention from eating meat) indicated the last night before Lent. Originally, however, it was probably a party to celebrate the beginning of spring. The Venice Carnival was transformed in 1420 into what has remained until today. The doge had a party organized for the first time following the defeat by the Venetians of northern Aquileia. In one ceremony, an ox and 12 pigs were slaughtered, symbol of the enemy Aquileia. From that moment onwards, this festival took place every year and included more and more the citizens of Venice.
Despite the many visitors and the general chaos, the Venice Carnival is undoubtedly an event not to be missed for all lovers of Italy. Go there at least once in your life!
BUT! … just a suggestion: those who intend to spend the night in Venice during the Carnival period, would do well to book accommodation much earlier. The hotels in Venice are quickly filled, making it even more difficult to find cheap accommodation that is not on the islands or in the surroundings.
