ΟΙ ΚΥΚΛΟΙ – The Circles Shop and Gallery

ΟΙ ΚΥΚΛΟΙ (The Circles) is one of the oldest galleries in Nicosia. It’s been working since 1980 with the aim of promoting the artistic creation to the Cypriot audience. The place itself that looks very businessy and more like a shop – hundreds of paintings are stored all around the place, artists – or maybe art conservers – are working right there on the second floor. There are pieces of art made in different manner and with different materials, one can find original works of artists, silkscreens, gravures along with copies and natural frames. Some of them look really brilliant, but others can remind of cheap art that people’re used to hang somewhere in dark corner of the house. All together looks impressive though.

I liked the explanation of the concept that stands behind the Gallery name: ‘The circle is made from the uninterrupted line that defines the whole and nothing. It is the perfect scheme because it has neither beginning nor end symbolizing infinity and eternity. It’s a symbolic shape that unites spirit and material. It is also a symbol of harmony, balance and wisdom’.
